Instructions
- 1
Line a rimmed baking sheet with a large sheet of foil (enough to wrap your bread loaf completely; you may need two pieces).
- 2
In a liquid measuring cup or small microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter, crushed garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Microwave until the butter is melted, about 1 minute. (Alternatively, you can do this in a small pan on the stovetop.) Stir well, then let cool slightly as you prepare the bread.
- 3
Using a serrated knife, slice the loaf into 1-inch-wide slices, going almost all the way through, but leaving the bottom of the loaf uncut. Turn the loaf a quarter turn and hold the slices together with your hand as you carefully slice again, perpendicular to the first cuts, to make squares.
- 4
Place the loaf on the foil-lined baking sheet. Dip a pastry brush in the butter mixture, then carefully pull each section of the bread apart just enough to brush the butter all the way to the bottom of the slices. When all of the butter is used up, gently fill the gaps with the shredded cheese. Press the bread back together as you pull the foil up around it and wrap tightly.
- 5
Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the loaf from the oven and carefully pull back the foil to expose the top. Return to the oven and bake until the cheese is melted and the loaf is lightly crisp on top, about 10 minutes longer. To serve, remove the foil and slide the loaf onto a plate. Pull apart chunks and enjoy. Love the recipe? Leave us stars and a comment below!
